Read below and acknowledge what is THC-O and how it is made?

Since hemp has been legalized in the US at the federal level, several new products of cannabis containing minor cannabinoids are popping up. One of these is a non-natural cannabinoid THC-O acetate. Continue reading to find out more about this relatively new and potent cannabinoid.

What Is THC-O?

  • THC-O or THC-O-acetate is a synthetic form of THC. Being the stronger analog of delta 9, THC-O is 3 times more potent than delta 9. The psychedelic effects of THC-O are stronger than the conventional THC. When compared to delta 8 THC, THC-O is roughly 5 times more powerful than delta 8.

The effects of THC-O take longer to appear than regular THC. THC-O has more potent effects than the traditional weed but at low doses gives a similar feel. However, in large amounts, THC-O is more psychoactive and can have stronger psychedelic effects as compared to regular THC.

Raw Materials

  • Acidic cannabinoids or carboxylic acid is the original form in which cannabinoids exist in raw plant materials. THCA is a cannabinoid that when heated changes into the delta 9 THC. By the addition of two chemicals namely sulfuric acid, and acetic anhydride, THC-O Acetate can be produced under the supervision of a qualified chemist.

Since sulfuric acid and acetic anhydride are highly corrosive chemicals that are dangerous and difficult to handle, the production of THC-O is carried out in a highly controlled environment.

How Is THC-O Made?

  • To make THC-O from hemp, first CBD is derived from THC hemp which is then converted to delta 8 or its similar counterpart. Then finally an organic solvent acetic anhydride is added to the mix. This process removes all flavonoids and terpenes. The end product is a viscous, odorless, and flavorless THC isolate that has a polarizing potency.

THC-O-acetate is an analog to THC although it does not exist naturally and is synthetically made from CBD. Even though THC-O is a cannabinoid, it undergoes a series of extractions to reach its final useable form. It is synthesized safely using modern cannabis tech.

The Non-Natural Cannabinoid

  • The fact that THC-O Acetate is not a naturally occurring cannabinoid may cause concerns for whole-plant cannabis proponents. But creating THC-O acetate is a complex procedure that is impossible to carry out at home.

Moreover, the chemicals required to synthesize THC-O are dangerous. So the process is conducted in specially designed expensive equipment by taking safety under consideration.

Metabolism Of THC-O In The Body

  • THC-O has introspective properties and is considerably psychedelic with its potency reaching up to 300% that of THC. The manufacturing of cannabinoid isolates requires extensive processing which eliminates flavor and aroma. Just like THC-infused edibles, the body takes time to metabolize THC-O Acetate.

While delta 9 takes less than 30 minutes to kick in, the effects of THC-O are considerably delayed. Because THC-O is a prodrug in nature, it takes longer to digest and therefore the onset of effects is comparatively slow. The effects of THC-O begin to appear usually after an hour.

THC-O Is A Prodrug

  • Researchers have concluded that THC-O is a prodrug. A prodrug is a compound that is biologically inactive and needs to be metabolized for activation. After the metabolism of THC-O, a highly bioavailable adaptation of delta 9 is left behind. This variation of delta 9 THC formed after digestion of THC-O is well absorbed and circulated in the body.

Thus increasing THC-O’s bioavailability and potency. This is what makes it thrice as potent as delta 9 THC. THC-O is therefore a leading-edge cannabinoid famous for psychoactive effects and euphoric feelings typically associated with cannabis use.
